Louisiana Attorney General Buddy Caldwell has joined 20 other state attorneys general in opposing Maryland’s gun law.
The Associated Press reports the brief from the attorneys general was filed this past week in U.S. 4th Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Virginia. They argue that Maryland’s law violates citizens’ rights to keep and bear arms protected by the Second Amendment by imposing a ban on the possession of commonly used weapons. The Maryland law adds 45 guns to a list of illegal assault weapons and prohibits handgun magazines with more than 10 rounds.
“You know something is definitely wrong when legislatures continually try to criminalize the full exercise by Americans of their Second Amendment rights to protect themselves while at the same time decriminalize the possession and use of drugs,” Caldwell says in a prepared statement. “These continuing and repeated assaults on our Second Amendment rights have got to stop.”
Other attorneys general joining in the brief were from West Virginia, Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah and Wyoming.
