Initial claims for unemployment insurance crept up last week in Louisiana — and remain sharply higher than a year ago, according to the Louisiana Workforce Commission. For the week ending March 28, initial claims for unemployment insurance totaled 4,563. That’s an increase from 4,414 the previous week. For the comparable week in March 2008, there were 2,441 initial claims. Continued claims for unemployment insurance increased to 43,295 for the latest week — more than double for the comparable week last year. The report was issued the same day that the federal Labor Department said that the national unemployment rate for March hit 8.5%, the highest since late 2003.
