Gov. Bobby Jindal says he is backing three bills that would give the state more budget flexibility and help protect health care and higher education during spending cuts. Jindal says putting all state spending on the table is important when looking to improve efficiencies across state government. Jindal is backing two bills by Sen. Gerald Long, R-Winnfield, one of which would increase the annual 5% cap of cutting dedicated funds to 10% during a deficit. That will mitigate budget cuts that may be made to health care and higher education. The other bill sponsored by Long would allow interest earned on specific statutory dedications to be used during a deficit. Jindal is also backing a measure from Sen. Mike Walsworth, R-West Monroe, that would require the sunset of all dedicated funds, with a few exceptions.
