A BYGONE ERA

I will certainly miss the ladies at Overpass Cleaners (“Change comes to a neighborhood,” March 3). When I walked in the door, they always knew, even if I didn’t, whether or not we had clothes for pick-up. If I happened to stop by without my checkbook, they would still give me my clothes and tack on the bill to the next pick up. I love the new businesses in our area but the personal service at Overpass can’t be replaced.

Hopefully the plan for the Greens at Millerville includes major retailers and possibly some entertainment venues to compete with Livingston Parish’s Juban Crossing (“La. Supreme Court kicks Greens at Millerville lawsuit back to trial court,” Daily Report, March 9). If not, Sherwood Forest to Denham Springs will be just like New Orleans east: a heavily populated residential area with vast lands of dealerships and very few restaurants, retail outlets, and other resources.

MEDICAL MULTIPLICATION

The current $1.6 billion budget deficit and anticipated cuts to higher education statewide should tell us that it is not time for a full-blown, third medical campus in Baton Rouge (“BR Health District could include a medical school, diabetes center,” Daily Report, March 6). Not now, and not for the foreseeable future.
Medical education is the most expensive form of education any state university can offer. We already have too many four-year campuses, and to add a third medical school would be a drain on the state treasury that is bound to be harmful.
