Amazon founder Jeff Bezos predicts artificial intelligence could dramatically reduce the amount of time people spend working, potentially making a three-day workweek or single-income households more common, Fortune reports.
In a recent interview with Fox News, Bezos said AI-driven productivity could allow people to support their families while working fewer hours, with some choosing to leave the workforce if they no longer need a second income. He suggested the resulting shift could make hiring more difficult as workers gain greater financial flexibility.
Other business leaders, including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon and Bill Gates, have also predicted shorter workweeks as AI boosts productivity. Elon Musk has gone further, suggesting AI and robotics could eventually make employment optional within 10 to 20 years.
Despite his optimism about AI’s long-term potential, Bezos acknowledges the technology boom presents challenges for investors. He says the technology is real and could benefit society, but the rush to fund new ventures makes it difficult to distinguish promising businesses from unsuccessful experiments.
Amazon is investing heavily in AI, planning to spend more than $200 billion on capital expenditures in 2026, largely on data centers. At the same time, the company has cut approximately 30,000 corporate positions since late 2025, showing the tension between productivity gains and workforce reductions as businesses restructure.
Bezos’ space exploration company, Blue Origin, is also pursuing AI-related opportunities, including plans for data centers in space. The broader debate centers on whether AI’s economic gains will translate into greater flexibility for workers or primarily benefit businesses and investors.
