One of the most heated proposals of the legislative session—whether to merge historically black Southern University at New Orleans with the largely white University of New Orleans—faces a showdown on the House floor today. Gov. Bobby Jindal and House Speaker Jim Tucker are pushing the merger proposal against strong opposition from the Legislative Black Caucus. White Democrats are the toss-up vote and will determine whether the consolidation proposal passes or fails. To pass the bill requires a two-thirds vote. The proposal would consolidate SUNO and UNO into the University of Louisiana at New Orleans. It would be a single university with shared accreditation and leadership, but with two colleges possessing different admissions standards, missions and program offerings.
