Rep. Walker Hines, a New Orleans Republican, is dropping his bid for secretary of state. Hines, who is in his first term in the House, says he won’t seek any elected office this fall, choosing instead to enter the private sector and improving his health. “At some point in the future, I plan on returning to public service to offer myself to Louisiana voters as a major office candidate,” says Hines. Hines, 27, switched from the Democratic to the Republican Party in November 2010. He announced his plans to run for secretary of state in February. But since then, several high-profile candidates have entered the race, including House Speaker Jim Tucker and Democrat Caroline Fayard. Scott Angelle, a Republican who is serving as secretary of the Department of Natural Resources, is also reportedly eyeing the race. Tom Schedler, who took over as secretary of state after Jay Dardenne was elected lieutenant governor, formally launched his re-election bid last week.
