Louisiana was ranked as the second best job market in the country during 2008 by a Gallup poll. Only Wyoming was ranked ahead of Louisiana in the survey, which was based on polls of more than 112,000 adults during the course of the year. The state had a net new hiring index of 35, which was based on the percentage of people who say their companies are hiring, minus the percentage who say their companies are letting people go. Wyoming had a net new hiring index of 40. The states that fared best in the survey tended to be energy producers, such as Wyoming, Louisiana, South Dakota and Texas. Michigan, which has been devastated by the collapse of the U.S. auto industry, was judged to have the worst job market. See the survey here.
