Johnny Berthelot, the former mayor of Gonzales, is running for the state House. Berthelot, a Republican, says he will run for the District 88 seat, which is currently held by Rep. Mert Smiley Jr. Smiley, a Republican, is running for Ascension Parish assessor. Berthelot, the mayor of Gonzales for 24 years before retiring in 2008, says he still has an abundance of fight in him. He plans to run on a platform of reducing traffic congestion, improving public education and investing in job development programs. The House election is set for Oct. 22, and qualifying begins Sept. 6.
