City-parish sales tax collections were down 3.5% in February, when compared with totals from a year earlier. East Baton Rouge parish businesses collected nearly $11.9 million in February, according to the Department of Finance, compared with the nearly $12.3 million collected in February 2008. The decline was entirely due to a drop in sales in the incorporated areas of the parish, which was off 13% to $6.6 million. Vehicle tax collections posted a 17% drop, which was an improvement over the 24% plunge that happened in January. Through the first two months of the year, sales taxes are up 2.3% over the first two months of 2008, to $24.4 million.
