The House Appropriations Committee has rejected a divisive proposal to mandate drug testing for certain welfare recipients. The committee voted 11-5 today against advancing the measure by Rep. John LaBruzzo, R-Metairie, possibly dooming the bill for the session. Opponents raised concerns about the costs of the bill and the limitation of the drug testing to only one group of people who receive money from the state. Others say current law already provides for drug screening. LaBruzzo’s bill targets poor mothers in the Family Independence Temporary Assistance Program, known as FITAP. LaBruzzo says he singled out FITAP recipients who receive cash payments from the state because they have children depending on them.
