Cardiothoracic Surgeon • Baton Rouge General

For Andrew Bishop, the payoff comes when a patient can breathe comfortably again, return to a hobby or hear that lung cancer surgery has left them cancer-free.

Those moments give purpose to a career built around exacting surgical work. The Baton Rouge General cardiothoracic surgeon operates on hearts, lungs and major vessels, with work that includes aortic aneurysm repair and transcatheter aortic valve replacement.

After earning his medical degree at the University of Toledo, Bishop completed an integrated cardiothoracic residency at the University of Kentucky, where colleagues voted him Most Valuable Resident Colleague. He has since earned board certification and is helping grow Baton Rouge General Heart and Vascular Surgery.

His commitment to better care also includes collaboration with the hospital’s Lung Nodule Clinic and medical mission trips to underserved areas. He has presented and published work on surgical ergonomics and trainee wellness and helped develop a free exercise program to reduce surgeons’ pain.

For Bishop, technical excellence and compassion belong together. A patient’s recovery matters, but so does the trust earned along the way.

The best business advice I’d share: “People don’t care what you know, they just want to know you care.”
What guides a difficult decision: “Make a decision that you’ll respect tomorrow or a year from now. Don’t make a decision just to avoid being uncomfortable in the moment.”

What will matter more as AI reshapes work: “The value of human connection and relationships.”

Something else worth knowing about me: “I spent my summers working on the family chicken farm. I know more about chickens than I ever wanted to know.”
