An ongoing dispute between the legislative auditor and insurance commissioner is marring Louisiana’s ability to certify its end-of-the-year financial statements. The books are officially closed for the budget year that ended June 30, but the financial report can’t be formally certified under national accounting standards. The dispute centers on the state-run insurer of last resort. Legislative Auditor Steve Theriot says he can’t complete an audit of the Citizens Property Insurance Corp. because Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon refuses to provide some financial records. Donelon has cited confidentiality agreements with private insurance companies. Lawmakers said today they might intervene, worried that the dispute could harm the state’s financial reputation.
