Cox Communications has introduced a new high-speed Internet service package in Lafayette Parish, but the company has no firm dates for when the service will debut in metro Baton Rouge. A Cox spokeswoman says Ultimate Cox High Speed Internet Package, which allows customers to download a high-def movie in 16 minutes, will come to Baton Rouge “in the near future.”

“The plan is to have this service in two-thirds of our footprint by the end of 2010,” says Ann Ruble, a company spokeswoman. Ruble says the high-speed Internet was launched in Lafayette because of “loud and vocal demand.” The Lafayette Utility System has launched its own fiber-optic Internet, phone and cable service. Ruble says LUS wasn’t a factor in introducing the new service in Lafayette first. “Every place is competitive for us,” she says.—Timothy Boone
