Members of the East Baton Rouge Parish School System’s transportation committee plan to meet to discuss transportation options for parents of children who attend Buchanan Elementary School’s gifted and talented programs and live outside of the school’s regular attendance zones, particularly those that live in the southeast area of the parish. Talk of eliminating direct bus routes for such students has inspired some parents in the area to discuss the possibility of forming a separate public school district. The committee is headed by School Board member Kenyetta Nelson-Smith, which has been a sticking point for some parents who consider her unsympathetic to their cause. The committee meets at 6:30 p.m. Monday at McKinley Middle Academic Magnet.
