Business Report staff received one gold and three silver awards at the Alliance of Area Business Publishers’ annual conference this past weekend for its reporting on issues in the Baton Rouge business community.

“To compete internationally and receive this kind of recognition is a tribute to our talented and dedicated team,” says Julio Melara, Business Report president and CEO. “It is also an honor to represent Baton Rouge and share this success with our community, which has supported us for more than 35 years. We are grateful and will continue our commitment to excellence.”

Stephanie Riegel won a gold award in the best scoop category for her breaking Daily Report story about the DXC Technology Center bringing 2,000 jobs to New Orleans, as well as two silver awards for best feature and best investigative reporting for her stories on industrial waste in St. James Parish, and the East Baton Rouge Council On Aging payouts, respectively.

“This investigation shows how a nonprofit agency that was supposed to help the elderly squandered money for decades,” the judges wrote of Riegel’s Council On Aging story. “This story is powerful because Riegel builds outrage by showing how the agency kept operating in spite of critical financial audits.”

Business Report also won a silver award in the best ancillary publication category for its 2017 Trends in Health Care edition.

A group of 24 faculty members form the University of Missouri School of Journalism judged more than 484 entries from 37 publications from the U.S., Canada and Australia.
