Baton Rouge was ranked fifth in a survey of the country’s sickest housing markets. 24/7 Wall St. based the rankings on U.S. Census Data for overall homeowner and rental vacancies in the second quarter. Baton Rouge had a 3.9% homeowner vacancy, the 11th worst out of the 75 largest U.S. cities surveyed, and a 13% rental vacancy rate, which was 12th overall. The report notes that while Baton Rouge held up better during the national recession, it is paying the price for post-Hurricane Katrina overbuilding. Local vacancy rates have been going up since 2010. Tucson, Ariz., was ranked as the sickest housing market, while other cities in the top 10 included Indianapolis, Memphis, Tenn., Atlanta and Detroit. See the full report here.
