Baton Rouge General has announced plans to partner with William Carey University, a private Christian liberal arts college in Mississippi, to offer a four-year bachelor of science degree in nursing beginning this fall.
The program aims to increase the number of nursing graduates each year and bring more highly trained nurses to the Baton Rouge market. William Carey at Baton Rouge General will offer an 18-month curriculum in conjunction with its current online RN-to-BSN bridge program. Additional educational opportunities in health care may be offered as the university expands.
“As health care changes, the way we educate nurses is also changing,” Baton Rouge General Chief Nursing Officer Monica Nijoka says in a statement. “We see this affiliation as the best of both worlds, combining Baton Rouge General’s nursing experience in patient care with William Carey’s academic expertise.”
The BRG School of Nursing currently offers a two-year program that graduates between 35 to 40 nurses each year. However, that program will end in December 2019 and its final class has been accepted.
William Carey University at Baton Rouge General will admit the first cohort of students this fall. Students will be on campus beginning in the summer term to complete required courses prior to the launch of the program in August.
