A study of traffic congestion in the 100 largest U.S. metro areas found that Baton Rouge was the only city to report an increase in 2008. Traffic congestion was up 6% in 2008, according to Inrix, a supplier of live and historic traffic information. There could be a bright side to having more cars on the road locally because Inrix notes the recession and high gas prices caused traffic to drop by 30% nationally. Riverside, Calif., which has been hard hit by the declining housing market, saw the biggest drop in traffic congestion, a 57% plunge. Baton Rouge was ranked 33rd for traffic congestion, despite having the 67th largest population. The study says traffic congestion peaks locally at 5 p.m. Friday — a fact that should come as no surprise for anyone who has lived here for more than a week. See the full report here.
