Armstrong running for local BESE seat

Russell Armstrong, a founding member of the state School Turnaround Office, is running for a seat on the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. Armstrong is running for the District 8 seat, currently held by Linda Johnson of Plaquemine. Johnson has said she will not run for re-election. District 8 includes parts of East Baton Rouge, West Baton Rouge, Ascension and Iberville parishes. Armstrong says he will push to expand school choice programs, revise teacher tenure so that educators are judged based on the effectiveness of their instruction, and improve school accountability. Armstrong, a Teach for America alumni, worked for the KiPP charter school network before joining the turnaround office.
