DIG magazine has relocated its offices from 5075 Nicholson Drive to the first floor of the Advocate building at 7290 Bluebonnet Blvd. DIG Editor Cody Worsham says the weekly tabloid moved its staff of 12 full- and part-time employees in late October into a 2,000-square-foot suite of first-floor offices in the Advocate building.
“We are in the old newspaper education offices on the first floor,” says Worsham, who could not say how much DIG is paying for the space. “It’s two offices and some cubicle space. I consider it to be an upgrade to our old space, even though it’s similar in terms of square footage.”
The arrangement between the two publications came about because DIG—which was formerly known as Tiger Weekly before rebranding in 2011—was looking for new office space. The weekly already uses The Advocate’s printing presses on Reiger Road and The Advocate helps DIG with distribution.
“We were looking to move and they said, we have space that’s available,” he says.
Last summer, The Advocate began advertising to sublease the 25,622-square-foot space on the fifth floor of its six-story building for $18.75 per square foot, or about $40,000 per month.
Publisher John Georges said at the time the 125,000-square-foot office building is far larger than his operation needs and subleasing extra space is a way to cut down on expenses while also making better use of existing space. The fifth floor space remains available.
The Advocate recently submitted plans with the city-parish for its $9.87 million renovation and expansion of its headquarters facility and newsroom at 10705 Reiger Road. The building is set to be three stories and 48,657 square feet. —Stephanie Riegel
