A weekend of blue dogs and Big Baby

The LSU Museum of Art in the Shaw Center kicks off a unique show this weekend that displays the talent of one of Louisiana’s most recognizable artists, George Rodrigue. “Blue Dogs and Cajuns on the River” features more than 80 original paintings and sculptures that illustrate the progression of Rodrigue’s 40-year career and reveal the origins of his iconic Blue Dog. The exhibit opens to the public at 9 a.m. Saturday, and there are a slate of events set to mark the kickoff. At 11 a.m. Saturday Rodrigue will demonstrate how to draw the blue dog, and his wife, Wendy, will read her children’s book Are You Blue Dog’s Friend?. At 2 p.m. Sunday, Rodrigue will demonstrate his work and sign books. Proceeds for the event will benefit children’s literacy programs. Tickets for the event are $20 and $40 and include free food and music and a chance to meet Davis and possibly shoot hoops with him.
