Zeeland Street Market, which has been a popular lunch spot at 2031 Perkins Road in the Garden District for more than a decade, will begin serving weekend brunch and nightly dinner this summer.

The restaurant has also recently secured a liquor license and is currently undergoing a renovation—adding a bar, replacing the interior floor and fixtures, and increasing the exterior deck to allow for more outdoor seating.

Owner Stephanie Phares has long wanted to increase the restaurant’s offerings and says the time was right for expansion, particularly with the recent closure of nearby Chelsea’s under the Perkins Road overpass.

“With Chelsea’s being closed there is a need for more of a neighborhood, nighttime place to go,” she says.

As part of the expansion, Zeeland Street Market will also expand its menu of soul food and home-style cooking. Current favorites include dishes like pot roast, meatloaf, and baked chicken with sides of mashed potatoes, stewed greens and cornbread. Phares says her new dinner menu will include an additional cut of meat or two as well as fried dishes with rotating specials.

Once construction is completed in late May or June, Zeeland Street will begin with its new brunch service on weekends. Once that is underway, Phares plans to add the dinner service.

Additionally, Phares is exploring the addition of a to-go service targeting busy families in the 70806 and 70808 ZIP codes. As a working mom with two daughters, Phares says she knows how hard it is to juggle family and career, and she believes there is a pent up demand for healthy, home-cooked, prepared meals.

“I get a lot of moms telling me that by Wednesday and Thursday they need help on dinner so I have decided to come up with a four-person to-go order,” she says. “You can eat just like you’re at home. “

Phares hopes to start the new service at the same time Zeeland Street Market begins serving dinner.
