A 26,000-square-foot Y facility housing a fitness center, aerobics studio, community meeting room, outdoor pool/splash pad and tennis courts will open sometime next year on Liberty Way in Zachary, the YMCA of the Capital Area says. It will be the ninth Y facility in the Capital Region and the second to use New Market Tax Credits in its financing package. The YMCA says it has set a fundraising goal of $3.5 million to help build the facility and has raised nearly $166,000 thus far. U.S. Bank is committing $3.3 million of New Market Tax Credit equity in support of the facility’s construction. It’s to be built on a 5.25-acre tract at 401 Liberty Way. Established by Congress in 2000, the New Market Tax Credit Program is designed to help stimulate economic growth, support job creation and foster small business growth in underserved communities across America. As part of its participation in the program, the YMCA says 60% of the Zachary facility’s workforce will come from qualifying low-income areas.
