Three Louisiana projects in the Barataria and Terrebonne basins are receiving a total of $102 million to help restore wetlands and barrier island habitats. Acting U.S. Secretary of Commerce Rebecca Blank says the awards are funded through the Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act program. Officials say Great Lakes Dredge & Dock and Weeks Marine will restore beach, dune and marsh on Pelican Island in Plaquemines Parish and West Belle Pass barrier headland in Lafourche Parish. The third award will rebuild marsh and build an 11,000-foot-long protective ridge in the Bayou Dupont area in Jefferson Parish. Blank says the projects continue the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s long-term investment in the Louisiana coastline, which has lost about 1,900 square miles of land since the 1930s.
