In a report for federal campaign officials, U.S. Sen. David Vitter says he has more than $2.5 million in his campaign war chest. Vitter, a Republican, is up for re-election next year. While no challenger has formally announced plans to run against Vitter, several candidates are reportedly mulling over the idea, including Secretary of State Jay Dardenne, a Republican, and Shaw Group CEO Jim Bernhard, a Democrat. Today is the Federal Election Commission deadline for campaign finance reports from the first quarter of the year. Vitter’s report has not been posted yet on the FEC Web site, but Vitter’s office made it public. It shows his campaign raised more than $730,000 in the first three months of the year.
