At the invitation of Mayor Kip Holden, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx will deliver the keynote address at this year’s Smart Growth Summit, to be held at the Manship Theatre in downtown Baton Rouge in early November.
Foxx will address summit attendees at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 4, the last day of the summit, which kicks off on Tuesday, Nov. 3, and features a wide range of local, national and international experts who will discuss issues such as transportation, real estate and community resiliency in the wake of major disasters.
The summit, which is celebrating its 10th year and is annually organized by the Center for Planning Excellence, attracts planners, developers and public policy experts from around the state.
Aside from Foxx, this year’s guest speakers include Ron Sims, a social justice advocate and former deputy secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development; Chris Leinberger, president of LOCUS, a project of Smart Growth America, and a promoter of walkable urbanism; climate change expert Peter Calthorpe, who co-authored the Louisiana Speaks Regional Plan; and Portland, Oregon-based planner John Fregonese, who also co-authored the Louisiana Speaks Regional Plan and created the FuturEBR master plan.
