LSU former women’s basketball players and current WNBA standouts Seimone Augustus and Sylvia Fowles are among 21 finalists selected for the 2012 USA Women’s Basketball Olympic Team. The squad will be coached by Connecticut head coach Geno Auriemma. Augustus and Fowles became the first LSU women’s basketball Olympians in 2008 when they helped the Americans claim gold at the 2008 Beijing Games. Augustus averaged 7.9 points per game, and Fowles averaged 13.8 points and 8.4 rebounds as the U.S. steamrolled to an 8-0 record and the gold medal. Connecticut had a total of seven former players selected to the team. Tennessee was second with three, while both LSU and Baylor produced two. Augustus is coming off the greatest year of her WNBA career yet with the Minnesota Lynx. In her sixth WNBA season, the Baton Rouge native averaged 24.7 points in the WNBA Finals and was named Finals MVP as the Lynx took the title over the Atlanta Dream. Fowles played in her finest WNBA season with the Chicago Sky last summer. She was named the WNBA Defensive Player of the Year and made the All-Star team for the third time in her career.
