NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Tulane university’s student center has won a prestigious architectural award.
Tulane’s Lavin-Bernick Center for University Life has received the American Institute of Architects’ 2009 Institute Honor Award.
The Lavin-Bernick center was one of nine buildings honored by the AIA, which praised the center’s ecological design. The AIA cited the designers’ use of canopies, shutters and balconies to provide shading and passive cooling.
Also praised was the building’s mixed use of air-conditioning, radiant surfaces, ventilation, daylight and artificial lighting. According to the AIA, the building was the result of a complete redesign of an older, inefficient structure. The renovation was completed 14 months after Hurricane Katrina.
