Trinity Marine Products will close its Brusly plant on Oct. 23, resulting in 283 workers laid off, according to a notice the plant’s manager wrote to the Louisiana Workforce Commission.

All barge production and administrative tasks at the plant, located at 7555 Choctaw Road in Brusly, are expected to be finished by Nov. 30.  The layoffs will come in waves, with the first coming on Oct. 23, then Oct. 30, Nov. 13 and Nov. 30, the notice says.

“There is no bumping rights in this situation and employees should have no expectation of recall,” plant manager Jerry Matchett wrote to the Workforce Commission.

The notice does not give a reasoning for the plant’s shuttering. Matchett was out of the office Wednesday, and messages from Daily Report left with the company’s senior human resources head in Madisonville were not returned as of this afternoon’s deadline.

Trinity Marine Products builds tank, hopper and flat-deck barges for inland and coastal waterways. Its website says it has six manufacturing plants in the South and Midwest.
