One of the corridor’s ferries is about to get about $1 million in facelifts and other improvements, thanks to the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act. The U.S. Department of Transportation is spending a total of $60 million in 19 states to build and improve ferry docks and facilities. The Plaquemines/Sunshine Ferry is getting $350,000 to improve the landing with upgraded hydraulic systems and another $650,000 to replace the main engine of the M/V Ascension boat to improve speed, efficiency and reliability. The M/V Ascension is also one of four ferry boats in the Capitol Region getting $300,000 in new navigational radar systems to improve safety and efficiency. “The projects we selected will help put people back to work and at the same time offer more access to areas that lack transportation options,” says U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “It is about providing more travel choices to people from communities that need it the most.”
