Six people to watch in Capital Region health care

Dr. John Tabor
Surgeon, Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center

Tabor, a member of the general surgery team at Our Lady of the Lake, in 2014 became the first surgeon in the Baton Rouge region to perform a robotic Whipple procedure, a complex surgery for pancreatic cancer that may extend life or be a potential cure. He is also part of the team that completed the first minimally-invasive esophagectomy in the area. The surgeon also works extensively with training residents and teaching medical students, and routinely volunteers on projects to allow kids with disabilities and medical/oncology diagnoses an opportunity to enjoy fishing and the outdoors.

David Winwood
Chief business development officer, Pennington Biomedical Research Center

Winwood—the center’s first chief business development officer—is tasked with taking Pennington’s discoveries in health, prevention, and treatment of chronic diseases to the global marketplace. He’s up to the task, having more than 20 years of experience in technology transfer and commercialization. As CBDO, he will lead externally facing outreach in pursuit of new business initiatives, strategic partnerships, and sponsored research, and the development of commercialized technologies.

Cyndi Knox
Director of Clinical Research, Mary Bird Perkins – Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center

Knox is the one who will set the overall direction and development of the Cancer Center’s clinical research program. This includes the design, planning, and implementation of a portfolio of clinical research projects to help cancer patients and physicians more easily and effectively access leading-edge clinical trials. Additionally, she will take a leadership role in the Gulf South-Minority Based National Cancer Institute Community Oncology Research Program, an initiative to help provide more Gulf South residents with advanced cancer treatments. Knox has been with the Cancer Center since 2008.

Hugh Eley
Deputy Secretary, Louisiana Department of Health & Hospitals

For eight years, Eley oversaw the state’s Medicaid home and community-based long-term care programs. With the departure of outgoing deputy secretary Courtney Phillips this month, he will manage and oversee budgeting for all of the department’s major program offices, including behavioral health, aging and adult services, citizens for developmental disabilities and public health, as well as the Louisiana Commission for the Deaf and human services districts. He will also chair the state’s Human Services Interagency Council.

Nanette Gremillion
Physical therapist, Newborn and Infant Intensive Care Unit
Woman’s Hospital

You’ve heard the phrase: Never wake a sleeping baby. But for premature babies any movement—including sleeping—can be extremely exhausting. To give these infants the most comfortable rest environment they need to thrive, Gremillion, a physical therapist, implemented the use of a new fluidized positioning device, or “sleep pillow,” for certain ones. This positioning device can be individually molded to simulate the mother’s womb and assist with sleep, thereby enhancing growth through comfort and support.

Francinne Lawrence
Director, Survivorship Services
Mary Bird Perkins – Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center

Earlier this year, Lawrence launched THRIVE, a new survivorship program that combines research-based complementary therapies with traditional cancer care. Her creation of a burgeoning Mind-Body Medicine offering has developed into a facilitywide integrative medicine program addressing the comprehensive physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs of the cancer survivor as a whole. THRIVE programs, provided at no cost, include health and wellness coaching, mindful yoga, healing art, Mind-Body Together meditation and support group, nutritional education, Pilates, water aerobics, therapeutic massage.
