Whether you can only take 30 seconds of it or an entire afternoon, you have to admit south Louisiana’s swamp pop sound—with its French, Cajun and Creole influences—is a genre you just can’t find in any other corner of the planet. Absorb the sounds of Wayne Toups and Kenny Fife along with an endless list of musicians with last names like Broussard, Melancon and Thibodeaux. It’s truly a Louisiana musical treat, and proceeds help the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The event will be at the Lamar Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales. Gates open at 5 p.m. Friday for $12, and 10 a.m. Saturday for $10, and the shows go extra, extra late into the evening. Visit swamppopmusicfest.com for details and schedule.
What else is going on this weekend? Tickets are selling fast for The King and I, starring Leonard Augustus, at the Baton Rouge Little Theater. Billy Graham and friends heading to the levee for Rock the River, and things are getting Harry at the movie theaters.
