Southern University at New Orleans reported spring enrollment of 3,318 students, the highest number since the devastating floods of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and about 91% of the number who were enrolled when that hurricane hit. The number released today was a bit short of a recent projection of 3,500. That was the number of students registered, but university officials say financial difficulties prevented some from attending. The enrollment figures come as state officials consider Gov. Bobby Jindal’s proposal to merge historically black SUNO with the neighboring University of New Orleans campus. Jindal last month asked the state Board of Regents to study the idea. A consultant’s report on the proposal is due to the board by March 1.
