Representatives from Southern University and LSU are headed to overseas performances. The drumline from Southern’s famed marching band will go to Africa next week for performances in Morocco and Algeria. Southern says 14 members of the band will perform in theaters, a children’s center, at sporting events, as well as on a morning television show. The Jaguar band’s trip comes at the invitation of the U.S. State Department through its performing arts initiative. The band members leave Tuesday and return Feb. 5.
The LSU Golden Girls and Tiger Girls dance troupes will go to Hong Kong in February to take part in the 2011 Chinese New Year celebration. They will perform in the Cathay Pacific International New Year Night Parade Feb. 3. Along with a California-based choir, they’re the only American acts performing in the parade, named by Lonely Planet as one of the world’s most fascinating attractions and celebrations. The LSU contingent will leave Jan. 31 and return Feb. 6.
