You might have noticed on the way into work that the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is sponsoring ads on local radio slamming freshman Baton Rouge Congressman Bill Cassidy for his vote against President Barack Obama’s $819 billion stimulus package. The DCCC also is targeting Republican congressmen in other parts of the state and nation. The spots are expected to air for at least a week. The ad accuses Cassidy of voting against “economic recovery to immediately create and save over 32,000 Louisiana jobs.”
When he voted against the package last week, Cassidy said Democrats had “ignored Republican concerns about the magnitude of wasteful spending in this bill,” like $200 million to repair the National Mall, including $21 million for sod, and another $200 million for arts and culture programs. Cassidy spokesman Wes Climer told the Times-Picayune,”This is the politics of hope and change?”
In addition to the radio ads in 28 Republican districts, the DCCC will also begin a grassroots initiative this morning that includes targeted e-mails to 3 million voters and nearly 100,000 person-to-person telephone calls. “These are serious times. Hard-working families are worried about keeping their jobs, health care and homes—they want action, not House Republicans cheering about doing nothing,” says Brian Wolff, executive director of the DCCC.
