The national economic stimulus bill could provide billions of dollars in bailout aid for Louisiana and help to stave off some of the most devastating budget cuts being considered for next year. One analysis put Louisiana’s share of the stimulus funds at as much as $3.5 billion over two years, though not all of that could be used to plug state budget gaps. The U.S. House is planning a vote on the $816 billion stimulus bill today. In addition to tax breaks, the proposal includes $550 billion in spending. Much of that is directed to state and local governments for health care, highways, schools, energy assistance and lump sum budget assistance. The money could help Louisiana balance its budget for next year, when the state faces a predicted $1.2 billion drop in state general fund income.
