Funeral provider Stewart Enterprises Inc. reported a boost in fiscal third-quarter profit, primarily because of a $12.4 million settlement of Hurricane Katrina damage claims. For the three months ending July 31, Jefferson-based Stewart earned $12 million, or 13 cents per share, compared with year-ago earnings of $6 million, or 6 cents per share. Revenue rose to $124.4 million from $122.6 million. Funeral revenue for the latest quarter totaled $68.8 million, up from $66.7 million a year ago. Cemetery revenue was largely flat: $55.6 million compared with $55.9 million a year ago. Stewart owns and operates 218 funeral homes and 141 cemeteries in the United States and Puerto Rico.
