The state has canceled a Foster administration computer contract for the Office of Motor Vehicles, which officials say hasn’t delivered on promises despite seven years of work and a cost of $30 million. Col. Mike Edmonson, the Louisiana State Police superintendent who oversees the motor vehicles office, says the cancellation might prompt a lawsuit. But Edmonson told lawmakers on Wednesday he was dissatisfied with the work and believes his staff can do the remaining upgrade in-house. The cancellation of the contract with technology services provider Unisys Corp. is estimated to save the Department of Public Safety $4 million next year. An official with Unisys says the company was told the contract was canceled as a cost savings measure but didn’t receive complaints of any performance problems.
