A new report says St. Bernard Parish residents had the lowest average adjusted gross income on their federal income tax returns in 2007, with the average resident reporting less than $10,000. The report, from Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, a non-partisan research group associated with Syracuse University, notes that St. Bernard may have ranked last with an adjusted gross income of $9,959 because of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated the parish. Goochland County, Va., topped the list, with an average adjusted gross income of $137,045. Fifteen counties had averages of more than $100,000.
