Onward and upward: With a 23-13 win over No. 5 Florida State, Oklahoma retains its No. 1 ranking in the AP poll this week, while LSU jumped ahead of Alabama to the No. 2 spot. West Virginia jumped two spots to No. 16 with its win over Maryland, prompting ESPN’s “College GameDay” crew to plan a trip to Morgantown for Saturday’s game vs. LSU. 25 witnesses side with Jefferson: A motion filed by attorneys for suspended LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson contends that several alleged victims in a bar brawl involving Tigers football players incited the melee with a racial slur and that Jefferson’s only role in the Aug. 19 fight was to pull teammates away. The motion asks a judge to rule that police had insufficient evidence to arrest Jefferson for second-degree battery in connection with the incident. It also says the injuries to Andrew Lowery, who accuses Jefferson of kicking him in the face, were not serious enough to warrant a felony arrest.
