Could Aggies leave Big 12? Texas A&M has notified Big 12 officials it will explore its options regarding conference affiliation, reports ESPN. The Aggies say if they choose to leave the Big 12, they will do so according to conference bylaws and would support efforts to bring another school into the conference. There has been talk that Texas A&M would join the SEC. “We are working very deliberately to act in the best long-term interests of both Texas A&M and the state of Texas. This truly is a 100-year decision,” Texas A&M President R. Bowen Loftin said in a release. “While we understand the desire of all parties to quickly reach a resolution, these are extremely complex issues that we are addressing methodically.”
Could Mustangs replace Aggies? SMU has appealed to the Big 12 to allow it to join the conference, reports The Dallas Morning News. SMU Director of Athletics Steve Orsini and President R. Gerald Turner told the newspaper they believe they have a program ready to compete in a BCS conference and that joining the Big 12 makes the most sense. The Mustangs proved a key member of the old Southwest Conference; and core conference members Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor and Texas Tech are now in the Big 12. Texas A&M could be joining the SEC, and there has been talk about Houston and BYU joining the Big 12.
