Freshman gets honor for great first start: LSU righthander Kurt McCune was named SEC Pitcher of the Week. McCune, a freshman from Norco, was honored for his performance Sunday against Wake Forest. In his college debut, McCune pitched a no-hitter through 5 1/3 innings before allowing an infield single. McCune ended the day after throwing 6 shutout innings and striking out 7.

Heading back to coach son: Doug Williams is headed back for a second stint as Grambling’s head football coach. Williams announced today he will take over as head coach of the Tigers. He has been serving as general manager of the UFL’s Virginia Destroyers. Williams replaced the legendary Eddie Robinson as head coach of the Tigers in 1998 and coached at the school through 2003. During that time he went 53-17 and won three SWAC championships. Williams says one of the reasons he is going back to college football is to coach his son, D.J., who signed with Grambling earlier this month. Williams replaces Larry Broadway, who left to take the coaching job at North Carolina A&T.
