Sports roundup: LSU finalizes 2012 football schedule … Tigers to take on Northwestern in basketball tournament

First matchup against Towson: The LSU football team is a day away from holding the first practice of the upcoming football season, but the athletic department is already looking toward 2012. The Tigers wrapped up their schedule for next season by reaching an agreement to host Towson University on Sept. 29, 2012. Towson, which is located in metro Baltimore, plays in the FCS (the old Division I-AA). This will be the first football matchup between LSU and Towson, whose mascot is also a Tiger. LSU is set to play eight games in Tiger Stadium next season, with the non-conference matchups against North Texas on Sept. 1, Washington on Sept. 8, Idaho on Sept. 15 and Towson. The SEC schedule will be announced at a later date, but it should feature home games against Alabama, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and South Carolina.

Tigers versus Wildcats: The LSU men’s basketball team will open up play in the Charleston Classic Nov. 17 against Northwestern. The game between the Tigers and Wildcats will air on ESPNU at 2 p.m. and will be played in Charleston, S.C. The Tigers are set to play the next day against either Tulsa or Western Kentucky and will participate in a third tournament game Nov. 20. Also playing in the ESPN-sponsored Charleston Classic: Georgia Tech, St. Joseph’s, Seton Hall and Virginia Commonwealth.
