Back for more: LSU defensive tackle Charles Alexander has been granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA. Alexander missed all but one game in 2005 and all but three games in 2007. He’ll be the only returning starter on the Tigers’ defensive front.

Goin’ to the combine: Nine former LSU football players are scheduled to participate in the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis later this month. The players participating in the six day event are Herman Johnson, offensive lineman; Tyson Jackson, defensive lineman; Quinn Johnson, fullback; Brett Helms, center; Demetrius Byrd, wide receiver; Darry Beckwith, linebacker; Curtis Taylor, safety; Marlon Favorite, defensive tackle; and Ricky Jean-Francois, defensive tackle. The combine serves as a job fair for pro football teams and former college players.

Life in the fast Lane: So Florida can’t take a little ribbing, eh? So Florida coach Urban Meyer got his orange and blue knickers in a twist? Memphis (Tenn.) Commercial Appeal columnist Geoff Calkins says the joke is really on Volunteers Coach Lane Kiffin, who was reprimanded by the Southeastern Conference after incorrectly accusing Meyer of a recruiting violation. “Is it the right thing to do when you’re taking your team into Gainesville next season with Jonathan Crompton as your quarterback?” Calkins writes. “Nobody questions whether Kiffin has guts at this point. But they’re starting to wonder about his smarts.” To read Calkins’ column, click here.
