Geaux free: The LSU men’s basketball season opening game Nov. 12 against Nicholls State in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center will be open to the public free of charge. The game is part of the second-ever basketball-football doubleheader on the LSU campus, as LSU will have its homecoming football game with Western Kentucky that same day. The initial tip-off is tentatively set for noon but that start time could be altered, depending on the television time for the LSU-Western Kentucky football game, which will be announced by the league on Oct. 31. You can’t go home again: ESPN’s Chris Low says it shouldn’t come as a surprise that LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis isn’t talking about his return to Knoxville this weekend as the Tigers visit to take on the Volunteers. “It’s his first trip back to Neyland Stadium since being unceremoniously pushed out along with Phillip Fulmer and the rest of the Vols’ coaches following the 2008 season,” Low writes in a column today. “And, yes, Chavis’ blood still boils when he thinks about all that he invested at his alma mater and all that the Vols accomplished on his watch as defensive coordinator … and then how it all came crashing down.” Read the full column here.

19th hole: Dumas Memorial Golf Course will close on Monday, Oct. 24, to move all necessary equipment from the old clubhouse to The Waterfront building in Greenwood Community Park, 13350 Hwy. 19. The course will reopen with normal hours beginning Tuesday, Oct. 25. The Waterfront will be home to the new clubhouse and pro shop, as well as The Waterfront Café, rental spaces and kayak/canoe rentals. An event celebrating the Greenwood Community Park reopening will take place on Saturday, Oct. 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information click here.
