A Red Stick Farmers Market favorite, the Smith Creamery in Washington Parish was heavily damaged by an explosion early Wednesday morning. No one was injured in the blast, which was described as “massive,” according to WWL-TV. Reportedly, pieces of the building were found up to a quarter of a mile away. The State Fire Marshal believes a leaking propane tank triggered the explosion. The incident is under investigation, although fire officials say foul play is not suspected.
Smith Creamery is known for its non-homogenized milk and butter, as well as being one of the only dairies that produces the local delicacy Creole cream cheese. Production will be offline for a while, according to owner Warren Smith, but he hopes to have the business up and running again as soon as possible. BREADA is raising money to assist the Smith family during this dire period; those interested in donating can do so at breada.org/donate. Select “gifts” and designate for the Emergency Fund. Fund-raising will also take place at Saturday’s Red Stick Farmers Market. For more food news, check out 225 Dine here.
