Louisiana labor officials say first-time claims for jobless benefits were down because the filing week was shortened for the Christmas holiday. The state Workforce Commission says that for the week ending Dec. 25 there were 3,411 initial claims. The week ending Dec. 18 saw 4,262 filings. The four-week moving average of initial claims increased to 4,269 from the previous week’s average of 4,217. For the week ending Dec. 26, 2009, Louisiana took in 3,568 first-time filings for benefits. Those still looking for work filed for an additional 50,373 weeks of payments. For the comparable week a year ago, the unemployed filed for 63,861 weeks of ongoing benefits.
