The Shaw Group says it has achieved “substantial completion” of the new Virginia City Hybrid Energy Center, a 585-megawatt clean coal-fired generating plant in Virginia for Dominion Virginia Power. As part of substantial completion, the plant was operated at its rated capacity and released to Dominion for commercial operation. Shaw was initially awarded the engineering, procurement and construction contract in 2007. As one of the cleanest coal plants of its kind, the Virginia City Hybrid Energy Center is capable of burning a diverse mix of fuels,” says Andy Dupuy, president of the Fossil Division of Shaw’s Power Group. The plant will use “circulating fluidized bed technology,” which is recognized by the U.S. Department of Energy as a clean–coal technology for reducing sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide, Shaw says. Along with coal, the plant will use waste coal and wood waste biomass materials. Dominion Virginia Power is a subsidiary of Dominion D, one of the nation’s largest producers and transporters of energy and an operator of the nation’s largest natural gas storage system.
