The Shaw Group says its plans to build a nuclear power plant on the Florida Gulf Coast by 2016 have been delayed by at least 20 months. Progress Energy, which wants to build the plant in Levy County, was told by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission that foundation work couldn’t start until the plant gets a combined operating license. Progress had wanted Shaw to start excavating and building a foundation while the regulatory process was still going on. Earlier this year, Shaw and Westinghouse Electric won a $7.65 billion contract to build the plant. Jim Bernhard, Shaw’s president and CEO, says the company is continuing to provide field and engineering work in support of the licensing.
